How to Convert Filament Weight to Length
The conversion between filament weight and length depends on two factors: the filament diameter and the material density. The formula is:
Length (m) = Weight (g) ÷ (π × (d/2)² × density × 100)
Where d is the diameter in cm and density is in g/cm³.
Material Densities
Different materials have different densities, which affects how much length you get per gram:
- PLA: 1.24 g/cm³ (~330m per kg at 1.75mm)
- PETG: 1.27 g/cm³ (~320m per kg)
- ABS: 1.04 g/cm³ (~400m per kg)
- TPU: 1.21 g/cm³ (~340m per kg)
- Nylon: 1.14 g/cm³ (~365m per kg)
Why This Matters
Knowing how much filament you have left helps you plan prints and avoid running out mid-print. If you weigh your spool (minus the empty spool weight ~200g), you can calculate exactly how much filament remains.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much filament is in a 1kg spool?
For 1.75mm PLA, a 1kg spool contains approximately 330 meters of filament. This varies by material—ABS has about 400m per kg due to lower density, while PETG has about 320m.
How do I know how much filament is left on my spool?
Weigh your spool on a kitchen scale and subtract the empty spool weight (typically 200-250g, often printed on the spool). The remaining weight is your usable filament.
Why does my slicer show different length than this calculator?
Slicers sometimes use different density values or include extra factors. Our calculator uses standard material densities. Small variations are normal and won't significantly affect your prints.
What's the difference between 1.75mm and 2.85mm filament?
2.85mm filament is thicker and used by some printers like Ultimaker. The same weight of 2.85mm filament has less length than 1.75mm. Make sure you select the correct diameter for accurate conversion.
